What is Dermaplaning?
Dermaplaning is a gentle exfoliation procedure. It involves using a sterile blade to gently scrape away the top layer of dead skin cells. This treatment can also remove fine “peach fuzz” hair from your face, improving makeup and skincare application.
Dermaplaning is often used to prepare the skin for other treatments, such as chemical peels or microdermabrasion. It can also be used as a standalone treatment to improve the texture and complexion of your skin. Over time, dermaplaning treatments can reduce the appearance of skin concerns like fine lines and wrinkles, scars, and enlarged pores.
Dermaplaning Benefits
Dermaplaning is quick, comfortable, and effective. It is a suitable treatment option for most people since it is safe for all skin types and tones. The results from dermaplaning are not as long-lasting as more intensive treatments, such as laser resurfacing, but they are immediately noticeable. The treatment also requires no downtime, unlike many laser alternatives.
What Does Dermaplaning Feel Like?
During your dermaplaning treatment, a Rejuvenessence skincare expert will use a sterile blade to gently scrape away dead skin cells and peach fuzz. This process is relatively quick and usually takes about 30 minutes. While there is no discomfort caused by dermaplaning, patients may feel a tingling sensation as the blade is gently moved across the skin.
Dermaplaning Results and Recovery
Dermaplaning is generally safe for all skin types and requires no downtime. However, you may be more likely to experience side effects if you have sensitive skin. Possible side effects include mild redness and swelling that usually subside within a day or two.
After a single dermaplaning session, patients will notice improved skin clarity and vibrance due to a lack of buildup on the surface of the skin. Makeup and skincare applications will also be smoother and more effective after the vellus hair has been removed. Results will last approximately three weeks as more skin cells regenerate and vellus hair grows back.
A series of multiple dermaplaning treatments can lead to improved results over time and can even address a variety of cosmetic skin concerns. Skin texture, aging skin, sun damage, and pore size can all be visibly improved by regular dermaplaning sessions.
Ideal Candidates for Dermaplaning
The best candidates for dermaplaning are generally healthy adults without serious skin conditions. You may be a good candidate for this treatment if you have:
- Dull, dry skin
- Fine wrinkles or lines
- Enlarged pores
- Patchy, rough skin texture
People with more sensitive skin may experience more noticeable redness or swelling after dermaplaning but can still benefit from the treatment. Those with active acne or a skin infection, however, should not have dermaplaning until their skin has healed.
